Value vs. Complexity
Prioritization Framework Template

Plot every idea or task on a 2×2 — Value against Complexity — and let the quadrant tell you what to build first: Quick Wins, Big Bets, Maybes, or Time Sinks.

Use Template

Two axes. Four quadrants.

The Value vs. Complexity matrix skips scoring formulas entirely. Place each idea or task on two axes, and it lands in one of four quadrants — each with a built-in next move. Read how to customize the matrix for your business goals .

High Value + Low Complexity

→ Quick Wins.
Clear payoff, minimal effort — ship these first.

High Value + High Complexity

→ Big Bets.
Worth the investment — plan real time and resourcing.

Low Value + Low Complexity

→ Maybes.
Neither pressing nor risky — fill gaps between bigger work.

Low Value + High Complexity

→ Time Sinks.
Costly for little return — cut or defer.

// the matrix

Value × Complexity = one clear quadrant

Make two separate assessments of each idea or task:

How much value will it deliver? How much complexity will it take to build?

Once every idea or task is placed on the grid, the backlog sorts itself into four buckets. Quick Wins always surface first — Time Sinks stay visible, but never demand attention.

Quadrants that travel with your tickets

The Value and Complexity placements aren't locked inside Ducalis — push them straight back to your task tracker as labels, custom fields, or board columns, so the quadrant travels with the ticket.

Example: plotting a real backlog

Four initiatives, two axes each, one quadrant apiece — this is what a Value vs. Complexity-plotted backlog looks like in practice.

Add CSV export High Low Quick Win
Rebuild onboarding flow High High Big Bet
Add dark mode toggle Low Low Maybe
Migrate to microservices Low High Time Sink

Plot with Value vs. Complexity natively in Ducalis

Value vs. Complexity is a built-in framework — no setup, no custom fields to wire up. Open a board, pick the matrix, and start plotting.
